چکیده

We present early-time Keck spectroscopic observations and late-time Hubble Space Telescope (HST) imaging of GRB000926. The HST images show a small offset between the optical transient and the compact host galaxy. Combined with the large equivalent widths measured for metallic absorption lines by the Keck Echellette Spectrograph and Imager (ESI) and the Low-Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (LRIS), this indicates that the GRB exploded near the center of its host. The ESI spectroscopy reveals two absorption systems centered at z = 2.0379 ± 0.0008 with a velocity separation of 168 km s, which we interpret as being due to individual clouds in the host galaxy. The ratios of chromium to zinc equivalent widths indicates the host is depleted in dust relative to local values to a similar degree as damped Lyman alpha systems at the same redshift. Further, the two clouds appear to have similar relative metal abundance and dust to gas ratio. If one cloud is associated with the GRB site, this implies the explosion did not significantly alter the surrounding environment.

Deep Ly α imaging of two z = 2 . 04 GRB host galaxy fields ⋆ , ⋆ ⋆

We report on the results of deep narrow-band Lyα and broad-band U and I imaging of the fields of two Gamma-Ray bursts at redshift z=2.04 (GRB 000301C and GRB 000926). We find that the host galaxy of GRB 000926 is an extended (more than 2 arcsec), strong Lyα emitter with a rest-frame equivalent width of 71 −15 Å. The galaxy consists of two main components and several fainter knots. GRB 000926 oc...

The Late Afterglow and Host Galaxy of GRB 990712.

We present deep Hubble Space Telescope (HST) imaging, as well as ground-based imaging and spectroscopy, of the optical afterglow associated with the long-duration gamma-ray burst GRB 990712 and its host galaxy. The data were obtained 48-123 days after the burst occurred. The magnitudes of the host (R=21.9, V=22.5) and optical afterglow (R=25.4, V=25.8, 47.7 days after the burst) favor a scenari...

The Host Galaxy of GRB 990712 ⋆ , ⋆ ⋆

We present a comprehensive study of the z = 0.43 host galaxy of GRB 990712, involving ground-based photometry, spectroscopy, and HST imaging. The broad-band UBVRIJHKs photometry is used to determine the global spectral energy distribution (SED) of the host galaxy. Comparison with that of known galaxy types shows that the host is similar to a moderately reddened starburst galaxy with a young ste...

The Host Galaxy of GRB 990123

We present deep images of the field of γ-ray burst (GRB) 990123 obtained in a broad-band UV/visible bandpass with the Hubble Space Telescope, and deep near-infrared images obtained with the Keck-I 10-m telescope. Both the HST and Keck images show that the optical transient (OT) is clearly offset by 0.6 arcsec from an extended object, presumably the host galaxy. This galaxy is the most likely so...

The optical afterglow and host galaxy of GRB 000926 ⋆ , ⋆ ⋆ , ⋆ ⋆ ⋆

We present the discovery of the Optical Transient (OT) of the long–duration gamma-ray burst GRB 000926. The optical transient was detected independently with the Nordic Optical Telescope and at Calar Alto 22.2 hours after the burst. At this time the magnitude of the transient was R = 19.36. The transient faded with a decay slope of about 1.7 during the first two days after which the slope incre...
